Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.)
OBJECTIVES

The two-year Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) program provides students with the opportunity for broad study of the various theological disciplines, while concentrating on a particular area. The program, directed by Edward Vacek, S.J., offers a disciplined course of study in Catholic theology that is appropriate for:
  • Those new to theology wishing to pursue general theological literacy or those with existing theology backgrounds who plan to deepen their theological interests and discern vocational goals
  • Those preparing for doctoral studies in theology who come with a strong accademic record in undergradaute theology
  • Those planning to teach Catholic theology at the High School level
  • Those seeking to integrate theology and professional life, such as attorneys, nurses, writers and others
At the conclusion of the first year of the program, students are expected to choose from one of four tracks: Theological Development, Pre-Doctoral Studies, Secondary Catholic Education, or Integrating Theology and Professional Life. The chosen track will appear on the student’s transcript.
 
PROGRAM SPECIFIC ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the admission requirements for all applicants. Applicants should possess intellectual inquisitiveness and imagination as well as the ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.  Consequently, the following is required: 1. A bachelor's degree gained with above average grades from an accredited college; 2. At least one third of the applicant's undergraduate program should have been in the liberal arts.  

Applicants should also manifest religious commitment, self-reliance, resourcesfulness, personal maturity and integrity.
 
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
 
Students must complete 48 credit hours with a GPA of at least 3.0. Up to 12 credit hours of graduate theology courses taken elsewhere may be considered for transfer credit. The program is designed so that a full-time student can complete it in two years. Part-time students must complete their degree requirements within four years of matriculation.
 
CREDIT DISTRIBUTION FOR COURSE WORK
 
48 credit hours must be completed as follows:
 
Biblical Studies: 6 credit hours
Church History: 3 credit hours
Historical Systematic Theology: 6 credit hours
Moral Theology: 6 credit hours
Pastoral Studies or Word and Worship
   or Church History: 3 credit hours
Electives: 24 credit hours
Final Paper:
Option A: 30-50 page, 3 credit hour research paper    
Option B: 10 page, non-credit theological reflection paper

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION
 
In each track, students have the option of selecting a concentration. Students are required to take at least 12, but no more than 24, of their elective credit hours in their chosen concentration. Students concentrating in spirituality may take six credit hours of Supervised Practicum in Spiritual Direction. The chosen concentration will appear on the student’s transcript.
