OBJECTIVES
The two-year Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) program enables those with a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) or a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) to pursue a specialization in a particular branch of theology. The program, directed by Thomas Massaro, S.J., offers a disciplined course of study leading to the second cycle ecclesiastical degree in Catholic theology that is appropriate for:
• Persons serving in official capacities within dioceses and religious communities
• Persons teaching in seminaries and other church institutions
PROGRAM SPECIFIC ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the admission requirements for all applicants. S.T.L. applicants must possess the Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B) (in American usage, the Master of Divinity (M.Div.)) or its equivalent in credit hours and course distribution, with a GPA of 3.5. Additionally, evidence of above average achievement in previous academic work is expected.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Students must complete 33 credit hours with a GPA of at least 3.0. The program is designed so that a full-time student can complete it in two years. Part-time students must complete the program within four years of matriculation. A minimum of two semesters must be spent in residence, during which students must attend the Licentiate Colloquium. Competence is required in Latin (or, in the case of biblical studies, Hebrew or Greek) and in a second modern research language. Competence may be demonstrated by examination, by successful completion of an intermediate-level course, or by prior certification of language testing. Up to six credit hours of graduate course work taken elsewhere may be considered for transfer credit.
